Realism:
Some writers who applied it in their works were:
Charles Dickens who was concerned with the problems of crime and poverty and the life of the lower class; George Eliot whose “novels are well known for their realism and psychological perspicacity”.
Some aspects which describe the characters of this movement are the following:
“Characters appear in their real complexity of temperament and motive; They are in explicable relation to nature, to each other, to their social class, to their own past”.
“Character is more important than action and plot; Complex ethical choices are often the subject”.
“Events will usually be plausible. Realistic novels avoid the sensational, dramatic elements of naturalistic novels and romances”.
Naturalism:
A writer who applied it in his works was:
Thomas Hardy in his local – color writings which probably involve “characters who have distinct traits and who are often involved in certain kind of psychological or social conflicts which, with the development of the plots, will in the end come to certain solution”.
Some aspects which describe the characters of this movement are the following:
“Characters’ lives are governed by scientific determinism, i.e., heredity and environment”.
“To show this determinism, naturalists often create weak and passive characters”.
“Sex and violence are bed partners; sex is brutish, without tenderness. Violence dominates the lives of the naturalistic character”.
Gothic Literature:
Some writers who applied it in their works were:
Charlotte Bronte in her work Jane Eyre which include “some characters who hold frightening and dark secrets, contributing to the atmosphere of mystery”.
Emily Bronte in her work “considered as Gothic Romanticism” which includes “features of violence, passion, the supernatural and heightened emotion”.
Some aspects which describe the characters of this movement are the following:
“Often the characters were larger than life, like Sherlock Holmes, and had exotic enemies to defeat”.
“Other Gothic characters include Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man”.
“It combines romance and horror in an attempt to thrill and terrify and the reader”.
Besides, interpret this quote with your own words, What did the author want us to reflect on?: “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” Charles Dickens .
I think the author means that even if you feel down and sad there is always a reason to feel special because we are the happiness and stregnht of someone else and that is at least a reason to feel a little bit better :)
